What Are Medicinal or “Functional” Mushrooms
Mushrooms are unique life forms—neither plant nor animal.
Unlike plants, they are not green, have no leaves or roots, and never produce flowers, fruit, or seeds.
From an evolutionary perspective, fungi are more closely related to humans than to plants.
They are everywhere, though often hidden. Most fungi consist of invisible single cells and hair-thin filaments that spread beneath the soil. Without them, many biological processes simply would not work.
Across the world, fungi act as guardians of forest health. They break down organic matter, recycle nutrients for plants, and provide water as well as natural protective compounds.
Living in a highly competitive environment, mushrooms defend themselves against bacteria and viruses with a wide range of natural substances. Remarkably, many of the pathogens that threaten fungi can also affect humans.
Some scientists suggest this is because, roughly 460 million years ago, fungi and humans shared a common ancestor. Over time, similar defense mechanisms against disease-causing microbes evolved. This helps explain why the enzyme systems developed by fungi can also help protect our bodies from bacterial and viral infections—a discovery that ultimately led to the development of antibiotics
WHAT FUNCTIONAL MUSHROOMS ARE NOT
Functional mushrooms are not miracle cures. They are not a substitute for medical treatment and do not work overnight.
Their strengths lie in their gentle, long-term support of the organism, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle. They are not to be confused with "magic mushrooms," the hallucinogenic fungi that fall under the Narcotics Act. Medicinal mushrooms have no intoxicating effect. What they can do is more subtle: They regulate, harmonize, and nourish at the cellular level.
What are functional mushrooms?
Safety and quality:
Functional mushrooms contain a highly concentrated combination of:
-
Beta-glucans
-
Polysaccharides
-
Triterpenes
-
secondary plant substances (e.g. polyphenols, flavonoids)
-
Minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron)
-
Vitamins (especially B complex, vitamin D)
-
Ergosterols
-
essential amino acids
This composition varies depending on the mushroom species, but is always complex. This is precisely what makes mushrooms so exciting for mycotherapy: They don't act in isolation, but rather as a natural network of ingredients, thus acting synergistically.
What you should pay attention to
The greatest danger with mushroom products lies not in the mushrooms themselves, but in poor quality: heavy metals, pesticides, and mold.
All of these can be found in inferior products. Therefore, the following applies:
Buy only tested, certified products
Pay attention to origin (ideally EU or controlled cultivation)
Require laboratory analysis, especially for liquid extracts
Consult a doctor if you are taking medication. Although medicinal mushrooms are well-tolerated, they can interact with medications depending on the extract and dosage. This is especially true for Cordyceps (for blood thinners) or Reishi (for immunosuppressants).
MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS AND SCIENTIFIC STUDIES
Scientific studies: Where do we stand?
Admittedly, much research on medicinal mushrooms is still in its early stages. The majority of studies are based on in vitro or animal experiments. Human studies are on the rise, but are not yet widespread, partly due to the complex and expensive nature of the studies, which usually only pharmaceutical companies can afford. Therefore, no claims of medical effectiveness are permitted in Europe. Medicinal mushrooms are legally classified as dietary supplements and not as medicinal products. But that does not mean they are ineffective. It simply means that the available studies are not (yet) sufficient for approval as medicinal products. In Japan, China, and the USA, some are further ahead in this regard. There, mushroom preparations such as those made from Reishi, Coriolus, or Cordyceps are sometimes even part of adjunctive oncology therapies.
